Shopify FAQ: What is Cart Overview?
Lucky Orange offers a wealth of cart and checkout information for our Shopify users, including the Cart Overview. In this help document, we’ll look specifically at what the cart value is and how you can use it.
What does the Cart Value show?
The Cart Overview is a default column in the table in Visitors for all of our Shopify users. It shows a glimpse into your visitors’ carts, giving you the ability to quickly see which visitors added more to their carts.
As they add more items to their carts, the number of items goes up as does the total value - or cost - of the cart. This ties in directly with your Shopify store details, making it an easy-to-understand representation of how visitors are adding products to buy to their carts.
If the customer completes the ordering process, the value of the cart won’t show $0. Instead, it will show the total price of the order. If there are multiple orders from the same customer, the cart value will show only the details of the last order.
Click on the shopping cart icon in the Cart Overview column to view the Cart Summary which includes:
- The item name and SKU ID number (if utilized)
- Item customizations such as sizing, inseam length and more
- The quantity
- Price of the item
- Order total
Note: Sales or discounts won’t reflect in the Cart Overview until the visitor completes the purchase. Cart Overview won’t be available for merchants using the Refresh theme. This theme is built by Shopify in a way that doesn’t allow the cart overview to be captured by our system.
How do I use Cart Overview?
Because Cart Overview is included by default for our Shopify users, it’s ready to go the moment you install the Lucky Orange tracking code.
As a reminder, the Cart Overview shows discounts and the final value of the cart upon the successful order completion. If the customer had multiple orders, the Cart Overview will show only the last order. Visit the customer’s Visitor Profile to see more about each session’s Events, watch a Session Recording and view the cart.
We also recommend marking our exclusive Shopify checkout Events as Key Events and then add the Key Events column to your table in Visitors to see if the visitor started to checkout, where they left the ordering process and if the order was successfully placed.
Shopify Events include the following (checkout-specific Events in bold):
Shopify Integration Event | Definition |
Recording Started | A visitor has viewed your page which initiated a Session Recording |
Searched | A visitor used your on-site search. This excludes search engines and organic search that occurs off of your site. |
Collection Viewed | A visitor viewed a collection page. This may or may not lead directly into a Product Viewed event. |
Product Viewed | A visitor has viewed a product. This will trigger for every product viewed. |
Cart Item Added | A visitor added a product to their cart. This will trigger for each product added to their cart. |
Cart Item Removed | A visitor removed a product from their cart. This will trigger for each product added to their cart. |
Cart Viewed | A visitor viewed their cart. This occurs regardless of whether there are products within the cart. |
Checkout Started | A visitor has started the checkout process. |
Checkout Address Info Submitted | A visitor is in the checkout process and has submitted their mailing address. |
Checkout Shipping Info Submitted | A visitor has supplied all the necessary contact and delivery information and has now selected a shipping rate. |
Payment Information Submitted | A visitor has successfully submitted their payment information. |
Checkout Contact Info Submitted | A visitor has submitted the completed checkout form. Should the payment be approved, the subsequent Event to trigger will be "Ordered". |
Ordered | Congrats! A visitor has successfully completed their checkout process. |
When these Events marked as Key Events in your table in Visitors, you can instantly see:
- Who added items to their cart but didn’t checkout
- Who added items to their cart and started to checkout
- Who added items to their cart and stopped in the middle of checking out
- Who added items to their cart and successfully submitted an order
With this information, you can watch Session Recordings for things such as:
- Information to clarify - If people are getting through everything but the “Checkout Shipping Info Submitted” Event, consider making your shipping prices more visible throughout the buying process so it’s not a surprise to these potential customers.
- Spot possible pain points - If people are leaving before checking out, see where they are going on your website prior to abandoning. Are they leaving at a product page? Where do they hover their mouse? Are they clicking around your footer for more information? What are they searching for?
- Source-specific details - Whether you use a filter or add a column for source, you can look at generic sources (i.e., Facebook, organic traffic, etc.) to combine this with your cart overview to find your most valuable audience. We also offer UTM parameters in both filters and column options for campaign-specific details, like PPC ads or specific Instagram ad sets. With this, you can see which campaigns produced the highest valued carts and the highest ordered rate.
