4 ways to use IP addresses
IP addresses serve a valuable purpose in identifying customers, spotting bot traffic or connecting an IP address with specific visitor behavior. To get more from IP addresses, here are four ways to use them.
In this article:
Search by IP address
Out of the box, all of your visitors remain anonymous with unique identifiers. However, if you know a visitor’s IP address, you can search directly from the Visitors’ Table. The IP address won’t be displayed with results as we used a hashed version of the IP address to find related visitors and their Session Recordings. The search will show you all of the visitors linked to that IP address.
- Navigate to Visitors from the left navigation
- Click on the Search field
- Paste or enter an IP address
Results will display automatically.
To further narrow your search, combine filters and IP addresses search:
- Click on Filter and select any number of filters
- Select the purple Done button to see results or click the gray Save Segment button to save this combination of filters for a later time
- Click on the Search field
- Paste or enter an IP address
Your results should now be refined to your specific filter and the IP address lookup. For example, if you want to see more about a customer with the IP address 123.456.789 who came from Facebook, you can filter your Visitors’ Table by UTM parameters to identify a specific Facebook campaign and then search by 123.456.789 to isolate the activity from that person who visited from that campaign.
Add IP address column in the Visitors’ Table
First, enable IP address display and storage settings. Before enabling IP address display and storage within Lucky Orange, we recommend speaking to a lawyer first to ensure you are compliant with privacy laws in your country as well as your visitors’ countries. We aren’t attorneys. This article isn’t intended to be legal advice and shouldn’t be used in place of seeking advice from your attorney. By default, the IP address column within the Visitors’ Table should display once this setting has been enabled. If it doesn’t show, you may have more columns than can fit on one screen. Use the arrows in the Visitors’ Table header to see other columns added to your Visitors' Table.
To change the order of the columns or to remove/add the IP address column to your Visitors’ Table:
- Navigate to Visitors from the left navigation
- Click on the column icon to the far right of the header. This is located under the Filter.
- Select the IP Address button. If this isn’t a visible column in your Visitors’ Table, it will be displayed in gray. If it’s already part of your Visitors’ Table, it will be shown in navy.
- To adjust the order of the visible columns, click and drag the navy column buttons located at the top of the page
- Click the purple Done button when finished
- If you have more than seven columns in your Visitors’ Table, use the arrows at the top of the page to scroll to more columns you have selected
Block by IP addresses
There are certain situations in which you will want to block an IP address, whether it’s to stop tracking internal traffic from within your organization, block abusive visitors or keep bots from being tracked. Whatever the case, you can also block an IP address from being tracked by Lucky Orange.
