How to filter Dynamic Heatmaps by device and segmentation

How to filter by segments within Dynamic Heatmaps

Within a Dynamic Heatmap, you can use segmentation, which are filters you can add to get as broad or as granular as you need to better understand people on your website.

Note: The segments filter within Dynamic Heatmaps isn’t linked to the Segments within the Lucky Orange app. Segments created in the Visitor’s Table or Settings won’t be available in Dynamic Heatmaps.

To open segmentation:

  1. Click on the Segments icon in the upper left corner of the Dynamic Heatmap
  2. Select from the available filters:
    1. Date: Refines the data by specific date ranges. By default, data will be shown over a 30-day period unless your data storage has been updated
    2. Historical view: Enables you to evaluate data on a previous website design. Click here for more details on Historical view.
    3. Source: Shows how people came to your website, such as through a PPC campaign or organic Google search
    4. Medium: Automatically lists the mediums of your traffic, such as search, social media or an email campaign
    5. Browser: Shows the browser type and browser version of visitors
    6. Operating system: Shows the operating system information of visitors
    7. Country: Lists what countries your visitors are currently based in
    8. Region name: Depending on your visitors’ locations, this will break down geographic locations further
    9. Number of visits: Displays the visit numbers of your visitors and customers

How to filter by Events

Events let you better understand what someone did on your website based on their behavior and engagements. You can create your own Events or use preloaded System Events to search for specific Events within your Dynamic Heatmaps.

Within Dynamic Heatmap segmentation, you can refine data by those with or without Events available in the drop-down.

How to save your segmentation from Dynamic Heatmaps

To use the saved segment, scroll through the segmentation options and click on the drop-down under Options. You’ll be able to quickly load that segmentation again in the future.

  1. Click on the blue Save this segmentation button located under Options
  2. When prompted, give it a name
  3. Select Save

Note: This saved segment will only be available to you and not accessible to the rest of your team. However, it won’t be accessible elsewhere within the Lucky Orange app.

How to filter by device

By default, a Dynamic Heatmap will display data and the view of desktop visitors. However, your visitors likely come from a variety of devices. Your Dynamic Heatmap can show you how traffic engagement changes by device type and how your web page appears on those devices.

Note: Adjusting the device type will filter the clicks/taps for the device you’ve selected.

  1. Click on Devices icon, located in the upper left corner of a Dynamic Heatmap
  2. Select your desired Device type (Desktop, tablet or phone) to see traffic using that device
  3. Once your Device type has been selected, your Dynamic Heatmap will automatically adjust to the size and dimensions of that device. You can also customize the width and height as needed.

What does it mean to emulate a mobile device?

Some websites rely on the browser’s user agent rather than the browser’s size to show a mobile version of their website.

A user agent is a bit of text that the browser uses to identify itself when loading the website. In other words, as a visitor’s browser connects to your website, the user agent is a way for the browser to tell the website, “Hey there! I’m Chrome on Windows.”  Want to learn more about user agents? Click here to learn more from How-To Geek.

Emulating the mobile device lets you see the mobile version of the website for better analysis and viewing. The only time you will likely need to use this feature is to segment down to the mobile version and the Dynamic Heatmap display isn’t displaying the website as you expected.

To enable this setting:

  1. Open the Device type if you haven’t already done so
  2. Select the checkbox next to Emulate mobile devices
