Why do asterisks show in Session Recordings?

Have you ever seen a Session Recording that showed visitors entering asterisks into an input field, such as a checkout, search or contact form? You know the visitor is typing, but why is it showing asterisks?

Here’s why you’re seeing asterisks: Lucky Orange takes security very seriously and has many policies, practices and features in place to protect both you and your visitors. While your visitor was typing as normal, our system replaced all visitor keystroke data with asterisks before any data was collected by Lucky Orange.

What this means: Inputs on fields, even if the field is non-sensitive, will be sent as asterisks when captured and played back in Session Recordings.

Why we protect keystroke data: In our experience helping hundreds of thousands of websites understand visitor behavior to grow their websites, this information isn’t necessary to help you optimize your website.

To keep both you and your visitors safe from possibly transmitting sensitive or personal information, this feature can’t be disabled regardless of whether the field is sensitive (e.g., credit card number) or non-sensitive (e.g., search).
